Saying that Kapellmeister Fuchs has reported ill for the month of August and September, that considering the severity of Fuchs's condition the prospects are not good for October [Fuchs died on 5 October], so that during this period Mahler is indispensable in Vienna, asking to be excused from participation for that period, and adding that Concertmeister [Arnold] Rosé is at the recipient's disposal.
